The Importance of an

Engagement Session

The engagement session is a great time to practice before the wedding day.  We want the portrait process to be as smooth as possible and having this time together laughing and working on posing helps us do just that.  We walk away knowing how we work together and with a confidence in each other that carries through to the wedding day.

You learn to trust us. Trust is so essential to our relationships with our couples and when our couples see that we understand them, and that we know how to make them look fantastic in their photos, we can get down to the business of making photo magic.

We encourage you to schedule your engagement photos 6-12 months before your wedding.  If you plan to use your images for your Save the Date cards you should plan to have the photos taken 1-2 months before you want to send them out.

Ideally we shoot our engagement sessions 1-2 hours before sunset.  This gives us beautiful soft light to work with and the bonus of a sunset if the clouds cooperate.

Are you having your makeup done for your wedding?  Your engagement session is a great time to have your trial run.  Not only will you get to have someone else worry about your makeup, but you will be able to see exactly how your makeup will look in pictures for your wedding day.  And don't forget the nails!  When we do closeups of that gorgeous ring, your fingers will be on display too.

Have some ideas of where you would like to have your engagement photos taken?  Some of the greatest photos come from a location that is special to the two of you.  Where do you spend time together as a couple?  Is there a spot that sums the two of you up as partners?

What to wear?  Keep the location in mind when picking out your outfits.  The easiest thing to do when trying to coordinate something for both of you is to think of yourselves as one whole outfit.  Compliment but don't match.  Bright colors are great but avoid tight small patterns and stripes.  Layering is a great way to achieve different looks without having to change and if you are looking to have two looks, go casual, and one date night.  Your shoes should be a reflection of you too!  BUT don't forget that we will be doing a lot of walking so you might want to bring a change along.  Above all, be comfortable and be you.

It is best to keep your wallets, phone, etc in the car if possible.  This will keep your pockets bulk free and your arms and hands ready.  We will keep your keys in our bag for you, but other than that, be free!

The most important tip we can bring to you is to relax and have fun.  Our goal is to have to fun, get to know you, and roll with whatever happens.  Your engagement photos are a great excuse to put aside the stressful parts of planning a wedding and just enjoy one another and have some fun together... and you get to use the photos for save-the-date cards, guest books and other pre-wedding items to make your special day even better.

Before your engagement session we will send you a short questionnaire as well as a Model Release.

Once the session is finished and the images are edited you will receive a link to your finished gallery which will include some tips on how to get the most out of the gallery.  From there you will be able to print, share, and download the high resolution image files.  The gallery also has an app that will allow you to download your favorites to your mobile device so that you can show them off without using your data or waiting for them to load.
