Forest Park / St. Louis

What was your first date?  Our first "unofficial" date was an after work run around Forest Park on a very hot June evening in 2010. After the run, John asked me on our first "official" date, out to dinner at Sasha's Wine Bar in the Shaw neighborhood and Ted Drewes for dessert.

Tell us the story of the proposal?  It was New Year's Day morning and John asked if I wanted to go on a run. I said no, because I was tired from the NYE festivities, but he was persistent. My niece had been born just two days earlier, so John convinced me to join him by insisting that if we ran early in the morning we'd have the rest of the day to hang out with the new baby. It was a sunny, winter morning and we ran our normal route in Forest Park. When we approached what I call "The Bouncy Bridge" John said that we should walk because the bridge might be icy. As we walked up to the bridge, John stepped off toward the bushes. I thought he was just blowing his nose (normal for winter runs!) so I just stood there enjoying the sun and the morning and waiting for him. When he turned around, though, he had a ring in his hand! He didn't get down on one knee, we just stood face to face at the foot of the bridge and he asked me to marry him. I said "Of course!" After finishing our run, we went to his parent's house for brunch, where we celebrated with both of our families for the rest of the day.

What is the mixtape of your relationship?

I Saw A Light by The Band Perry (Reminds me of the first time I met John)

Kiss Me Through The Phone by Soulja Boy (Because we were long distance for 3 years)

All These Things That I've Done by The Killers (The only running pump up song we can agree on) Shout (Because we love to dance at weddings)

And, of course, lots of love songs...

Only One by The John Butler Trio All My Life by The Band Perry

You and Me by Dave Matthews Band (John's favorite band)

Better Together by Jack Johnson When I'm With You by Ben Rector

Any pets?  We met as Zookeepers so we have quite the menagerie--a cat (Bandit), two snakes (Herbie and Jake) and a bunch of geckos. But we are actually both "dog people" and we want to get a dog sometime soon.

What is your date style?  Hiking or hanging at a park

John, What do you claim as your hometown?  Saint Louis

Carolyn, What do you claim as your hometown?  Saint Louis

Do either of you have a hobby? If so, what is it?  We are both runners and enjoy camping, hiking and going out to dinner with friends. John is a turtle biologist, so he loves being outside and looking for reptiles. He also likes to play ultimate frisbee and work on his car. Carolyn likes cycling, painting, reading and writing (and actually works as a children's book author!)

Check out Carolyn's awesome books!! and buy them for a little someone who loves to read.

Nichole is married to TJ Oldani. Together they are Oldani Photography.
